How to read a hair-testosterone value
Hair-testosterone values above the commonly reported female population range can arise from a range of sources, many of them not indicative of any specific condition. The most extensively studied context is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and other hyperandrogenic states, including non-classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Exogenous androgen exposure - including compounded testosterone supplementation and anabolic-androgenic steroid use - is also a documented cause of elevated readings. None of these contexts can be reliably inferred from a single hair-testosterone measurement.
